Pre-Design Phase: Site comparison, land selection, architect selection, and more

What’s been completed during the Pre-Design Phase?

  • Agreements were finalized with ICS, a strategic construction management and facility planning firm that specializes in K-12 schools.

  • The architect selection process also began to bring on a strategic partner to design our facility. More information about that process is detailed below.

  • The site selection process began — a critical milestone for our District and community. Find out more information on the site selection process below.

What will be completed during the Pre-Design Phase?

  • Finalize the purchase of the new site and begin working through the process for all necessary approvals with governmental and oversight agencies

  • Multiple facility programming meetings and planning workshop reviews including:

    • Establish guiding principles for the design process including visioning, planning, and conceptual design

    • Meetings with District administration and staff

    • Virtual building tours and visits of state-of-the-art facilities

    • Pre-design estimating and programming confirmation

How was the architect selected for this project?

  • An architecture selection committee was developed to evaluate architects for the project.

  • Twelve (12) school-focused architects were invited to submit their firm’s qualifications for the project.

  • Ten (10) firms were sent a customized Request for Proposal (RFP) for architectural design services for the new elementary school.

  • Eight (8) of those firms submitted official responses to the RFP.

  • Three (3) firms were shortlisted for interviews with the architecture selection committee.

  • SCHRADERGROUP was selected as the best fit for the new elementary project.

Planning workshop reviews

On Thursday, March 11, the first planning workshop review began to discuss various topics related to the new elementary site including site accessibility, parent and bus drop-off areas, site amenities such as playing fields, academic groupings, social structuring, and more. These key discussions will aid in the design process moving forward. Future workshops are planned in the coming weeks.

The images in the gallery below were taken during this workshop on March 11.

Site selection for the new elementary school

  • We understand how critical selecting the site for the new elementary school is for our community. This is a decision our District did not take lightly.

  • 23 sites were vetted as potential options during the last two years. Sites located in Middletown Township and Edgmont Township were shortlisted using the key priority drivers to the left.

  • With input from local experts and review by District staff and the School Board, the site that was selected best met these key priority drivers.

Understanding the locations of new developments and our existing students within each elementary school’s boundaries, the team sought to minimize impact and costs when selecting the new site.
